What's covered

Every Marketplace plan covers these ten essentials.

By law, every ACA plan has to include these benefits. Plans differ in what you pay each month and at the doctor, not in whether these basics are covered.

Exact coverage details, networks and cost-sharing vary by plan. Your agent will walk you through the specifics.

  1. 01

    Preventive & wellness care

Annual checkups, screenings and vaccines, usually at no cost to you.

  2. 02

    Emergency services

ER visits for true emergencies, even out of network.

  3. 03

    Hospitalization

Surgery, overnight stays and inpatient care.

  4. 04

    Prescription drugs

Generic and brand-name medications on the plan's formulary.

  5. 05

    Maternity & newborn care

Care before, during and after birth.

  6. 06

    Mental health & substance use

    Counseling, therapy and treatment programs.

  7. 07

    Pediatric care

Well-child visits, plus dental and vision for kids.

  8. 08

    Lab services

Blood work and diagnostic tests your doctor orders.

  9. 09

    Rehabilitative services & devices

Physical therapy and equipment to recover skills.

  10. 10

    Ambulatory (outpatient) care

Doctor visits and treatment without a hospital stay.

Who it's for

Preexisting conditions? You're still covered.

Under the ACA, no Marketplace plan can turn you down, charge you more, or limit your benefits because of a health condition you already have. Diabetes, asthma, pregnancy, a past diagnosis — none of it can be used against you.

That makes the Marketplace a good fit for a lot of people who don't get insurance through a job.

  • Self-employed

Freelancers, contractors and small business owners.

  • Lost job coverage

Laid off, changed jobs, or aging off a parent's plan.

  • Families

Parents who need dependable coverage for everyone.

  • Early retirees

Retired before 65 and not yet eligible for Medicare.

  • Gig workers

Drivers, couriers and part-timers without benefits.

Financial help

Many households qualify for help paying their premium.

The Marketplace offers premium tax credits that lower what you pay each month. Whether you qualify, and how much help you get, depends mainly on three things.

Some households may also qualify for lower deductibles and copays through cost-sharing reductions on Silver plans.

01

Your income

Estimated household income for the coverage year.

02

Household size

How many people you'll claim on your tax return.

03

Where you live

Plan prices vary by state and county.

We can't promise a specific amount — that's decided by the Marketplace when you apply. What we can do is run your numbers with you, in plain English, before you commit to anything.

Meet your agent

Hi, I'm Marisol.

Marisol Reyes · Licensed Health Insurance AgentNPN [0000000] · Licensed in [12] states

I've spent the last [10] years helping families, freelancers and early retirees find health plans that fit their budget. Before that, I worked in a hospital billing office, so I've seen what happens when people don't have coverage.

When you call, you talk to me or someone on my small team. No call center, no scripts.

Why work with a licensed agent?

  • Unbiased comparison

We show you every Marketplace plan in your area, not just one company's.

  • Help with the paperwork

Applications, income documents, tax credit forms — we handle it with you.

  • Support after you enroll

Questions about a bill or a claim next spring? Call the same person.

What is the ACA, and what is a Marketplace plan?

The Affordable Care Act (sometimes called Obamacare) is a federal law that created the Health Insurance Marketplace. Marketplace plans are private health insurance plans that meet the law's standards and may come with financial help based on your income.

Can I be denied for a preexisting condition?

No. Marketplace plans cannot deny you, charge you more, or exclude treatment because of a condition you already have. This applies to every plan we help you compare.

How much will a plan cost?

It depends on your age, where you live, household size, income and the plan you choose. Many households qualify for premium tax credits that lower the monthly cost. We'll estimate your options with you before you decide anything.

When can I enroll?

During Open Enrollment each fall and winter, or within 60 days of a qualifying life event such as moving, getting married, having a baby, or losing other coverage. Dates are posted in the Enrollment section above.

Is your help really free?

Yes. Licensed agents are paid by the insurance carriers, and your premium is the same whether you enroll with us or on your own. You'll never receive a bill from us.

What documents do I need?

Usually just the basics: Social Security numbers or immigration documents for everyone applying, an estimate of this year's household income (pay stubs or last year's tax return help), and details of any current coverage.

Can I keep my doctor?

Often, yes. Each plan has its own network. Tell us which doctors and hospitals matter to you and we'll check them before you choose a plan.

What's the difference between Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum?

They describe how you and the plan split costs. Bronze plans have lower monthly premiums and higher costs when you get care; Platinum is the opposite. Silver plans can come with extra cost-sharing reductions if your income qualifies.

Are you part of the government or HealthCare.gov?

No. GetAffordablePlan is a privately owned agency operated by licensed insurance agents. We're not affiliated with HealthCare.gov or any government agency. We help you use the Marketplace; we don't run it.
